DESCRIPTION: Childcare in the UK is expensive — but there's meaningful support available if you know where to look. Here's a plain-English guide to every scheme available in 2026.

SECTION: Why Childcare Costs Matter So Much
The average cost of a full-time nursery place in the UK for a child under two is well over £1,200 per month in many areas, and higher in London and the South East. For many families, especially those with two earners, childcare can represent the single biggest household expense after housing. Yet many parents don't claim all the support they're entitled to.

SECTION: Free Childcare Hours: Who Gets What
The government's funded childcare offer has expanded significantly in recent years:

All 3 and 4-year-olds are entitled to 15 hours of free childcare per week for 38 weeks a year (570 hours annually). This is sometimes called the Universal Free Entitlement.

Working parents of 3 and 4-year-olds can access up to 30 hours of free childcare per week (1,140 hours annually) if both parents work (or one, in a single-parent family) and each earns at least £2,167 per month (£26,000 per year equivalent) and no more than £100,000 adjusted net income.

Working parents of 2-year-olds became eligible for 15 hours of funded childcare from April 2024. This has since been extended to 9-month-olds onwards as part of the government's phased rollout.

You apply for the 30-hour code (and Tax-Free Childcare) through the Childcare Choices website at childcarechoices.gov.uk. Codes must be renewed every three months.

SECTION: Tax-Free Childcare
Tax-Free Childcare (TFC) is a government top-up scheme: for every £8 you pay in, the government adds £2 — effectively a 20% top-up. You can receive up to £2,000 per child per year (£4,000 if the child is disabled), across approved childcare costs including nurseries, childminders, after-school clubs, and holiday camps.

You must set up an online childcare account, deposit money into it, and use the account to pay your childcare provider directly. The money must be used with OFSTED-registered (or equivalent) providers.

Eligibility conditions are similar to the 30-hour entitlement: both parents (or the single parent) must be working, earning at least the equivalent of 16 hours per week at the National Living Wage, and no individual parent earning over £100,000.

SECTION: Universal Credit Childcare
If you're receiving Universal Credit and working (or about to start work), you can claim back up to 85% of eligible childcare costs — significantly more than Tax-Free Childcare for lower earners. You pay upfront and claim back through UC. There are no hours rules — any amount of work qualifies.

The maximum UC childcare element is £1,015.68 per month for one child and £1,739.37 for two or more children. Crucially, you must pay the childcare costs before you can claim them back, which can create cash flow challenges. Some councils offer emergency childcare deposits to help bridge this gap.

SECTION: Can You Combine Schemes?
You can use Tax-Free Childcare alongside free hours entitlement — for example, using your free hours and then using Tax-Free Childcare for additional hours. However, you cannot receive Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit childcare support at the same time. Work out which is more valuable for your situation before choosing.

SECTION: Employer Childcare Vouchers
The employer childcare voucher scheme closed to new entrants in October 2018, so you can no longer join this. However, if you were already enrolled before that date, you may still be using vouchers. Check whether Tax-Free Childcare would be more beneficial before cancelling existing voucher arrangements.

SECTION: Holiday and After-School Clubs
Don't overlook the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, which offers free activities and meals during school holidays for children in receipt of benefits-related free school meals. Many councils also run subsidised holiday clubs. These aren't widely publicised but can significantly reduce holiday childcare costs for eligible families.

SECTION: SimpleMoney Verdict
If you have young children and you're working, you should be using at least one childcare support scheme. The combination of free hours and Tax-Free Childcare (or Universal Credit childcare) can save thousands of pounds per year. Check your eligibility at childcarechoices.gov.uk — the application takes around 20 minutes.
